Subject: Number of tops vs. bottoms research studies
Question: In your September
2003 advice column you asked if anybody knew of studies that
confirm the conventional wisdom that there are more bottoms than
tops. Here are two representative ones:
Anthony P.M. Coxon, Between the Sheets, 1996, pp. 94-95, 107n.6. This book, which is from the British AIDS research firm, http://www.sigmaresearch.org.uk/, and available in most university research libraries, found that 35% of British gay men in of their studies didn't fuck at all, 16% are tops only, 26% bottoms only, and 23% versatile. Notice that because many versatile guys prefer to bottom, the net result is a lack of tops. Sigma Research has more up to date numbers on their web page, but exclusive tops remain rare.
Trevor A. Hart, et al., "Sexual Behavior Among HIV-Positive Men Who Have Sex With Men: What's in a Label?" The Journal of Sex Research, May 2003, p. 179-188. This professional scientific journal is also available in university research libraries. This study found that 12% of U.S. gay men in their recent study had little anal intercourse, but had the same amount of oral intercourse as other gay men, 18% are tops only, 23% are bottoms only, and 47% are versatile.
There are many more scientific studies I have looked at and here is my estimate of an overall average: of guys who fuck, half are versatile, but many prefer bottoming, and the other half are divided between exclusive tops and bottoms.
Dear Kat: Thanks for giving some scientific substance to my belief that there are more bottoms than tops.

Subject: How to tell when cruising?
Question: The other day, I was in a toilet at the mall which
is known as a good cruise spot. I did eventually end up having oral
sex but it took a while because there was no way to really discreetly
ask the guy in the stall next to me if he was interested. After
a while we both just kind of figured it out but I was wondering
if there is anyway you can ask (or at least let them know you are
interested) so that if he were straight he wouldn’t know I
was wanting to have sex with him or that he might not even know
that I was gay so that this spot could remain a secret and out of
the minds of the police. Or, how can I just tell that he is gay?
What can you tell me?
Dear John: The traditional signal is to discreetly tap your foot. If he taps his foot back you are on the same wavelength. Just as you can see his closest foot if you look, he can see yours. To one who is not in on the game it appears innocuous. To one who is in the know it signals interest.

Subject: Freezing cum
Question: I recently visited a bathhouse and proceeded to
suck off several cocks using a condom on each. I tied a knot in
each condom and saved them. I brought home five rubbers filled with
cum and put them in the freezer. When I got horny for more cock,
I defrosted the rubbers and sucked the loads of cum from each of
them. Is there still a chance of getting AIDS from frozen cum? Using
condoms protects me from other STDS but I hope I am not taking a
major risk in doing what I do. I would rather suck cum directly
from the cock but I hope what I am doing is safer.
Dear Cum Man: Let’s separate this into two parts. First, the freezing: think back to a few years ago when hemophiliacs were getting AIDS from blood products. Many of those blood products had been frozen. As well, the cum used in artificial insemination is frozen for six months to allow for testing for STDS and HIV, and if found positive is not used. So I would not count on your freezer to kill these viruses.
The second part of the question is weather swallowing cum is dangerous. I dealt with this at some length in a previous column that you can read at: http://www.cruisingforsex.com/columnDOUG/columnDOUG8.html.
Basically, many studies have shown that oral sex does have a small risk (much less than anal sex) of transmitting HIV, but no studies separate swallowing cum as being more dangerous than not swallowing.

Subject: Books about us
Question: I'm looking for a good gay, sex positive, read.
Not sleazy porn, but a good novel that also reflects my interests
as a sleazy gay man. How do I find such books (presuming they exist)?
Dear Reader:
Your best bet is to consult your local gay bookstore for recommendations.
For a list of gay bookstores try here: http://www.qrd.org/qrd/www/media/print/bookstores/.
Personally, I've enjoyed most of the works of Edmund White; particularly
The Farewell Symphony which is a celebration of the golden
age of promiscuity in the '70s. My personal favorite gay novel in
recent years was How Long Has This Been Going On by Ethan
Morden, which chronicles a very mixed list of characters as they
progress from their youth in the closeted '50s through their lives
of exploration into the ‘70s.
